Five years ago, the Center for Digital Equity set out on an ambitious journey: to build an ecosystem strong enough to help every resident in our region fully participate in an increasingly digital world. We didn’t do it alone. Residents, community organizations, government partners, libraries, educators, funders, advocates, and industry leaders all had a hand in shaping it. We believed that by bringing partners together, investing in communities, and testing bold new approaches, we could create lasting change.
Today, as we close this chapter of our five-year strategic plan, I feel two things at once: deep gratitude for what we built together, and real excitement for what comes next.
There is much to celebrate. Together, we:
- Expanded access to technology
- Connected residents with critical resources
- Strengthened digital skills
- Advanced policy conversations
- Built partnerships that continue to shape our community
Every milestone in this report belongs to the people and organizations who chose to work toward a shared vision of opportunity and inclusion. That shared ownership is what makes this work last.
To our partners: thank you. Thank you for your trust, your collaboration, your ideas, and your willingness to learn alongside us, even when the answers weren’t obvious. The progress in this report was built through honest conversations and a belief that meaningful change happens when communities work together, not around them.
Along the way, we learned something that reshaped how we think about this work. Providing a device is only the beginning. Connectivity alone doesn’t create opportunity. People need support, skills, trusted relationships, and systems that help them navigate an increasingly digital world with confidence and purpose. That lesson didn’t come easily, and we’re sharing it here because being transparent about what we learned matters as much as what we achieved.
That understanding moved us from digital equity to something broader: digital opportunity. Technology was never the goal. Opportunity is. Digital opportunity means:
- A student completing schoolwork at home
- An older adult connecting with loved ones on their own terms
- A job seeker accessing new career pathways
- A resident participating fully in civic, economic, educational, and social life
Equity means opportunity reaches the people who’ve been left out the longest. Inclusion means we build it with them, not for them.
As we developed our new strategic plan, we carried these lessons forward. We listened to our partners. We reflected honestly on what worked, what didn’t, and what communities told us they needed most. We let go of structures that no longer served the work and built new ones grounded in what we’d learned. Being willing to change course in public is what earns the trust this work depends on. The result is not a departure from our original vision. It is its evolution.
The next chapter builds on the foundation we created together, informed by experience, strengthened by partnership, and guided by a deeper understanding of what it takes to create lasting opportunity in a digital world.
As you read this report, I hope you see both the impact of the past five years and the promise of what comes next: the stories, the partnerships, and the lessons that shaped our journey. Most of all, I hope you see what we see. A future where more people have the chance to learn, connect, and thrive, and a community strong enough to make sure that future includes everyone.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us. The chapter we are closing matters deeply. The one ahead may matter even more.
